We’re on Day 7 of being snowed in. Well, not entirely. Matt has been able to go to work once this week and will likely go again this afternoon. But aside from a walk around the snowy parking lot, Henry and I haven’t gone anywhere since last Friday. Sigh. What have we been doing? Well…
Packing. I’ve acquired a lot of boxes and have even filled many of them. But I’m afraid to do much else, as we don’t know exactly when we’ll be moving. So I’m kind of at a standstill with the packing process. Henry loves the growing piles of boxes, although by now I’ve filled in much of the space he used to be able to climb in.
Sleeping. Or “trying to get Henry to sleep.” He’s taken fairly well to his new sleeping situation (as in, he likes his bed), but he also enjoys the freedom of being able to leave his bed whenever he wants to. As a result, it generally takes him at least half an hour to go down for a nap or bedtime. We shut him in his room with the light off and let him do whatever he wants (which usually results in a substantial mess of clothes, wipes, diapers, etc.) until he finally gets tired enough to fall asleep. He does like to be tucked in at that point and will cry/call for us until one of us goes in. At which point he runs to his bed, snuggles his head on the pillow, and says “Jesus” repeatedly. I realize that he’s asking for us to sing him a song (Jesus Loves Me), but I figure we must be doing something right as parents if our kid is thinking about Jesus as he drifts off to sleep at night.
Baking. We have plenty of time to make all the baked goods that we want and have been enjoying fresh bread, cookies, cupcakes, pancakes, french toast, and more. Unfortunately, we also have plenty to time to consume said baked goods. Sigh. Henry likes to help me with all of this, of course. And by help, I mean things like emptying all the pans from the cupboards, leaving forks on the floor for me to step on, pulling things off the counter (no, please not the food coloring!), opening the oven door (with an oven mitt on his hand… safety first, right?), and insisting on a bite of everything and/or a spoon to lick. He’s very helpful.
Baby. Admittedly, the process of buying a house and moving into it have been more on our minds than the arrival of this baby. It’s been a very easy pregnancy so far, so it’s been fairly easy to forget that it’s even happening (I can’t believe I’m saying that at 35 weeks!). Good thing this little girl is active day and night so that I don’t forget she’s in there! I recently got some books from the library to help Henry get used to the idea of a baby sister. He loves them all and asks for each one specifically (one is “Mike,” as the big brother’s name is Mike; one is “Be”, which is as close as he gets to saying Sophie, the main character in that book; one is just “baby,” maybe because it was the first one that we read about babies). Today Henry gave the baby some kisses and then brought over a sippy cup to give the baby a drink. Repeatedly (fortunately it was just water being poured on my tummy!). It was very sweet. And then he brought over a dustpan and put that on my tummy. I have no explanation for that one.
TV. Henry loves watching videos of himself, but we don’t love holding him up so he can see the computer screen. So lately we’ve taken to connecting the computer to the tv (which is how we normally watch things anyway) and playing all his videos for him. He loves it. And now whines “Henry tv, Henry tv…”
So… we’re having a good time.
