We’ve been busy!

This most recent week has brought us both an earthquake and a hurricane, but we’ve been pretty well occupied with a project at home and haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to all of that.  Here’s a little update:

Countertops: cut, sanded, sealed, installed!

Cabinets: Sanded and painted (frames)

Backsplash: Tiles on, ready for grout tomorrow

Dishwasher: Ordered, delivered, welcomed

Next up: Floor!  First we have 3 or 4 layers of old linoleum to remove, then we’ll get to work on the tile.  Plenty of details left and pieces to install, but we’re excited about the progress so far.  And a little exhausted.

Also of no small significance during this project has been my own culinary journey.  And by “culinary journey,” I mean learning how to cook everything in the microwave using as few actual dishes as possible.  Especially now that the sink is gone.  I will admit we started with Easy Mac and Ready Rice, but I’ve since learned how to cook normal pasta and rice in the microwave (in microwaveable paper bowls, no less).  We even had “stir-fry” the other night and I scrambled my first egg in the in microwave for breakfast yesterday.  Did I mention we didn’t even have a microwave until last week when I got one on freecycle?  So glad I did.

Tonight I was looking for something sweet, so I dumped a little bit of cake mix in a bowl, mixed in some water, and cooked it for about a minute.  It needed a little something more, so I tossed some mini marshmallows and chocolate chips on top and put it back in for 10 seconds.  Just enough to get the chocolate and marshmallows melted enough to spread around into a frosting.  Mini-cake in the microwave in less than two minutes?  Yes, please.   (I made a couple more for the kids, don’t worry)

Another week or so before we’re back in full working order around here, so we’ll see what we come up with.

Karen's post may have gotten me thinking about cake, but that one still involves measuring things (and wading into the pantry items in my displaced kitchen wasteland). Cake mix and water is more my speed right now. :-)

It seems to me that I remember being in the middle of a bathroom retiling project while waiting for you to be born. It must have rubbed off!

I think you're right, Mom. I was thinking about that while we tiled our bathroom a couple months ago.
